Easy-To-Grow Vegetables and Herbs
Here at Rake & Shovel, we want to encourage even the greenest of greenhorn gardeners to get their hands dirty! Often times, new gardeners are intimidated by the thought of growing fruits and vegetables in their backyards, containers, and window sills. But don’t worry – help is on the way, with these easy-to-grow and easy-to-care for fruits and vegetables!
Tomatoes like Celebrity, Sweet 100, and Summer Girl are all fantastic choices for your beginners’ garden. You’ll need to make sure to place the plants in full sun like (if growing tem from a window sill, try the south-facing side of your home
As long as you have a warm and sunny spot in your home, you can easily grow several types of peppers indoors. Cherry peppers and banana peppers are great indoors, and they like plenty of space so plot them out carefullt. If you’re new to gardening, you might be better off growing peppers from sprouts and not seeds.
Radishes are one of the easiest vegetables to grow both indoors and outdoors, and they’re ready to eat in just a few weeks. Plant them in plots at least 14 inches apart (or you could plant them in containers 14 inches wide) where it’s sunny, but not scorching.
Herbs are a great introduction to herb gardening. Your basil plant should be in a nice and sunny plot with 4 hours of direct sunlight each day. If you see your plant starting to wilt, water it. If it’s starting to flower, snip those flowers off to prevent the basil leaves from becoming too bitter.
